New Specialist High Skills Majors for a New School Year

Posted by Matt Elliott

The Premier of Ontario's office posted this release on their website today. The student success stories that have come from the Specialist High Skills Major programs across the province are testament to the difference your business or organization can make by registering today!

McGuinty Government Prepares Even More Students For Future Jobs

It’s every student’s dream — finding a career that matches their interests. Now, more Ontario high school students will get that opportunity.

The government is expanding its Specialist High Skills Majors (SHSM) program by adding two majors: Community Safety and Emergency Services and Information and Communications Technology. This will help even more students train for careers in fields such as fire protection, telecommunications and computer engineering.

Students learn on the job and in the classroom. They also earn valuable industry certifications, including first aid and C.P.R. qualifications. The program allows students to customize their learning, giving them more opportunity to explore career goals. Thanks in part to this program, graduation rates have gone from 68 per cent to 75 per cent since 2003. That means 22,500 more students have graduated.

The Specialist High Skills Majors program is part of the government’s plan to invest in the skills and education of its people.

QUOTES

“We’re helping students tailor their education so they can take charge of their futures and reach their full potential,” said Premier Dalton McGuinty.

“By providing these innovative learning opportunities, we are seeing more students engaged in high school and — more importantly — graduating,” said Education Minister Kathleen Wynne.

QUICK FACTS
  • SHSM programs are offered in 338 Ontario high schools.
  • About 14,000 students are enrolled in one of 14 available majors.
  • The program is now available in all school boards across Ontario.

Gearing up for a New School Year

Posted by Matt Elliott

We've spent all summer getting things ready for the new school year. In the last two months alone, we've made over 100 improvements to the EmployerRegistry.ca system, responding quickly to the great feedback we've received from all our users during this preview launch period. Some of the big changes include:

  • Full support for older web browsers, including Internet Explorer 6
  • Greater controls for our Passport to Prosperity coordinators, including the ability to change, modify and remove registrations
  • A new resources system, where users can upload and attach files (like brochures, PowerPoint presentations and other documents) to organizations with EmployerRegistry.ca
  • An extensive news & events system, which will allow Passport to Prosperity coordinators to share local success stories on their local mini-sites
  • A password reminder system for those mornings when you just can't remember
  • Improvements to the underlying architecture, making the site over three times faster than it was at launch

If you haven't been back on the site in a while, we invite you to look around and see what's new. As September approaches, we'll be continuing to build and develop, working our way towards EmployerRegistry.ca 2.0.

As always, if you have any questions or comments about the system, please email me.
