RENFREW COUNTY SKILLS COMPETITION
Scope of Welding
 
 

Purpose of the challenge:

To test and evaluate the various safety-oriented welding and fitting skills of today’s youth and to help prepare each student for the demands of the industry. Maximum number of competitors is 24. 2 students per school.  

 

NOTE:

  • ALL COMPETITORS MUST BE PRE-REGISTERED. NO LATE ENTRIES.

  • Appropriate clothing and safety equipment must be worn

  • No communication with teacher advisors or visiting students during the competition. All questions to be directed to the judges. 

 

General Skills and Knowledge to be tested:

•General safety on arc welding and safe working habits

•Blueprint reading ability (dimensions are given in imperial measurements)

•Transfer of measurements and other information from blueprint to the project

• Fit and tack weld components

•Welding with various processes, MIG and ARC

•Interpretation and application of welding symbols

•Cleaning of finished welds

• Lap joint, Butt joint, T-joint, Corner joint

*** The plans for the actual project will be supplied on the day of the competition. A practice drawing is included with this scope for student preparation – this is similar to the competition project.

Scriber, pen, pencil

 

*** Safety glasses must be worn during the contest.

Welding helmet & ear protection

Gloves and Safety Glasses

Chipping and Divider Hammers

Cold chisel, Wire Brush

Vice Grip, clamps, magnets Striker

7014 welding rods

• 2” x ¼” flat bar will be provided

12" Set Square Centre Punch

All power sources

 

Time Table:                    

8:00

Registration, Orientation & Safety Test - A minimum of 75% is required on the safety test to advance to the practical portion of the event.

8:30 – 11:00

Judging Criteria:    Total Possible score is 100%. A rubric will follow.
