OVERVIEW
This timed competition involves the competitors jacking up a car, installing two safety stands, removing two wheel and tire assemblies and re-installing them.
Staff will demonstrate a ‘walk-through’ prior to the competition.
NOTE: Safety is of the utmost importance. Unsafe procedure(s) will result in disqualification.
Details: Two contestants will start with both hands on the trunk of the car. At the signal, timing will start. One person will retrieve the jack and the axel stands, and prepare to raise the vehicle at the appropriate mark as indicated on the side of the car. The other person will loosen OFF the wheel lugs on the front and rear of the car using the power bar and the socket provided. Once the wheel lugs are loose, the car will be raised up. The stands will then be slowly lowered on the stands. The jack handle must be left in the upright position. The participants will then proceed to remove the wheels. Once the wheels are removed, the wheel will be rolled to the other end, (front to back, back to front), and the wheel will be re-installed. The wheel will be tightened sufficiently with the car jacked up, then the stands will be removed and the car will be lowered to the ground. Using the torque wrench provided, the participants will torque all the lugs to specifications. The jack, the stands and the hand tools will be placed behind the line marked on the floor. The jack handle must be left in an upright position. The contestants will return to the car and place both hands on the trunk. At this point, timing will stop. PENALTIES: Safe infraction – disqualified Cross-threaded/stripped lug nut or stud – disqualified Use of torque wrench to loosen or remove wheel lugs – 15 seconds Equipment not returned behind the line on the floor – 10 seconds Improper jacking or placement of the jack and axel stands – 20 seconds Failure to follow general outline above – 10 seconds Jack handles lying down – 5 seconds.
