SCHOOL TO WORK

WHAT IS CO-OP?

Co-operative Education is a planned learning experience, for which credits are earned, that integrates classroom theory and learning experiences at a workplace to enable students to apply and refine the knowledge and skills acquired in a related course.

Students will participate in a pre-placement orientation where they will discuss resume writing, interview skills, health and safety before they are able to go to a work site. Students will meet on a monthly basis with the co-op teacher in a group session to reflect on what they are learning at the work site.

Co-operative Education is a partnership between education and business that involves students, teachers, parents and employers.

WHAT IS OYAP?

The Ontario Youth Apprenticeship Program (OYAP) opens the door to apprenticeship in a wide range of exciting careers. If students are entering Grade 11 and are at least 16 years old, students can work towards a career in a skilled trade as a registered apprentice while completing their Ontario Secondary School Diploma (OSSD), and eventually become a certified skilled worker or journeyperson.

OYAP helps young people obtain placements in 141 skilled trades that can be learned through apprenticeship training. Students register as apprentices and begin their formal apprenticeship training while they are still in school. With both a diploma and the skills to get the job done when they graduate, these students have a big head start.

WHAT IS SHSM?

Specialist High Skills Major (SHSM) is a specialized program where high school students focus their learning on a specific area of study. They take courses in high school that are focused on sector specific knowledge and skills.  They also must complete specific certifications programs and two cooperative education credits that refine, extend, apply and practise their skills within an individual sector.
