Workplace Tour at HCE's Energy Centre

Posted by: Industry-Education Council Hamilton

Hamilton Community Energy (HCE) is partnering with IEC to provide educational and workplace tours to students at their Energy Centre.

Built, owned and operated by HCE since 2002, the district energy plant located at 79 Bay Street North, Hamilton ON, leverages reclaimed thermal energy to provide hot water district heating, and domestic hot water to approximately 2.1 million square feet of municipal, commercial and multi-residential space in the downtown core. The reclaimed heat comes from production of ‘on peak’ electricity for the City Hall and several other municipal facilities.

“Our staff is enthusiastic about sharing knowledge and showcasing HCE solutions as a way of inspiring the next generation of energy stewards. If you teach science, environmental science, social science and/or ‘Green’ club students – in fact, any students who are learning about energy, urban planning or sustainable development – booking an HCE tour is a great way to let them see the theories they’re learning about in class applied in real life situations.", said Ron Harten , General Manager at HCE.

IEC will play a great role in facilitating the workplace tours and encouraging educators to utilize this opportunity to enrich their curriculum and at the same time exposing students to careers in the energy field.
