What is the Halton Home Builder's Program?

The Halton Home Builder's Program is a four-credit program that provides a unique opportunity for students to explore a career in the construction industry. Students spend half their semester building a “project” house during 2-4 week Homebuilding blocks.  The other half of the semester is spent exploring the construction career(s) of their choice during 2- 4 week CO-OP placements.  The program runs in the first semester of the school year (September to the end of January).  Students from across Halton apply, are interviewed and 20 are selected to be part of the Halton Home Builder's Program.

Why get involved?

Halton Home Builders student's can...

  • Explore potentially lucrative careers in the construction industry (such as carpentry, electrical, plumbing, dry walling, masonry, and design/architecture).
  • Gain skills and experience that will be valuable to any post secondary destination - apprenticeship, university, college or the workplace.
  • Develop communication skills, teamwork skills, decision-making skills and self-confidence.
  • Make contact with future employers.
  • Work with the latest technology.
  • Complete Industry standard safety training (including: Construction Safety Association of Ontario- “Basic”, Fall Protection and Fall Arrest, and Construction WHIMIS).

The Halton Home Builder's Program Schedule

  • HHBP students spend Weeks 1 and 2- learning in-class safety training at WOSS.
  • HHBP students spend 2-4 week blocks on site building the Sundial “project house”.
  • HHBP students also spend 2-4 week CO-OP terms working with an employer in the subdivision or off site in the community.

What credits will I earn?

  • Students will earn 4 credits during the semesscter:
  • 2 Construction Technology credits & 2 Coop credits.  The 2 Construction Technology credits are earned by spending 2- 4-week blocks framing the project house. 
  • The 2 CO-OP credits are earned by spending 2- 4-week blocks working for an employer(s), in the subdivision or the community.

What can I do to prepare?

  • Take as many compulsory courses as possible so that you can leave a semester open for the Halton Home Builder's Program in your Grade 11, 12 or postgraduate year.
  • Take math each year through to the end of Grade 12. 
  • Take as many Construction Technology classes as you can prior to the HHBP.
  • Develop your employability skills-be on time and attend class everyday.
  • Strong references from your teachers and employers are important criteria for admission to the Halton Home Builder's Program.

When should I apply for the Halton Home Builder's Program?

Although students may apply in Grade 10 to participate in the Halton Home Builder's Program in Grade 11, it is recommended that students apply in Grade 11 for participation in their Grade 12, or apply in Grade 12 for participation in their post-graduate year.

How do I apply for the Halton Home Builder's Program?

Get a Halton Home Builder's Program application at your school guidance office.
Complete the application and book an interview through your school guidance office.

How can I get more information?

Visit your School Guidance Counselor. Your Guidance Counselor will provide information about:

  • Attend the career fairs and assemblies at your home schools.
  • Bring your parents to the Parent-Student School to Career Information Evenings.

Program Planning

  • If interested, choose course code ZHHBP4
  • Requires a full semester in Grade 11 or 12 or postgraduate.
  • Program runs in semester one.
  • Students earn 4 credits: 2 Construction Technology credits & 2 Coop credits
