How would this look?

Food and Nutrition Sciences, (HFA4M) Grade 12,University/College Preparation with the Nutrition Specialist Certification (period 2), The IDC40 Interdisciplinary Studies, Grade 12, Open course (period 5) with the Personal Training Specialist and the Recreation and Fitness Leadership, Grade 12, (PLF4C) College Preparation with the Fitness Instructor Specialist (period 6). The course would be taught to the ministry curriculum and the Can Fit Pro specialist will be molded around the expectations already addressed by the ministry. In essence the priority is already around the curriculum and the Can Fit Pro resources are just an application format to enhance what the student Is already learning.

New to Program!

We have been lucky enough to amalgamate with a company called East and West yoga and will be offering level 1 Yoga Exercise Specialist certification to students.  Starting in 2012-13, we are hoping the program will run as follows:

Semester 1:  University / College stream

3 credits + option to pick up exercise science or one other required course period 1

PLF4C, IDC4O/IDC4U, HFA4M

In this semester the student can earn certificates in Can Fit Pro Fitness Instructor, Can Fit Pro Personal Trainer, Can Fit Pro Nutrition Wellness Specialist, Yoga Exercise Specialist (level 1) and Rescue 7 CPR

Semester 2:  College / Workplace stream

4 Credits - PLF4C, IDC4O, Fitness Specialized Coop placement

In this semester, they could earn certificates in Can Fit Pro Fitness Instructor, Can Fit Pro Personal Trainer, Can Fit Pro Nutrition Wellness Specialist, Yoga Exercise Specialist (level 1) and Rescue 7 CPR plus great work experience in these fields.

Why is this so desirable for high school students?

These course run at Ontario Colleges (Algonquin, Canadian College of Massage, Champlain, Conestoga, Lambton, Sault and St. Lawrence) which presently charge students $5000 in order to take these courses and obtain these certification as part of their degrees. At Aldershot we could offer college level initiatives for free. In addition, it would help students who are looking to enhance their resumes and get applicable certifications that could help them with employment during university, college or the workplace. Students will earn three credits and the following certifications: a nutrition wellness specialist certification, a personal training specialist certification a fitness instructor certification, and CPR certification within the span of one semester.

Who can be successful in these courses?

All students can be successful in this program and all levels are targeted in this program. The course content is challenging, it is as challenging as a grade 12 University program; however, with the incentive of the certifications most students end up working beyond their potential.

I have taught this course to high-end university bound students and these students often go into school for kinesiology, naturopathy or physiotherapy. This program allows them to apply for jobs as personal trainers and fitness instructors, all the while improving their curriculum vitae.

College level students also use these certification courses to apply for jobs as personal trainers and fitness instructors and they are typically enrolled in recreation and leisure or health promotion programs.

I have also seen students who are workplace bound and they are currently working in gyms as full-time trainers and finding their niche in the fitness industry.

We are targeting students who are interested in either a career in the fitness industry (workplace), a college degree in recreation and leisure or a university degree in a kinesiology related field. We are targeting those that would take an extra year to attain certifications that will help them in their postsecondary field, or students who want an extra year to see if the fitness industry, rec and leisure or kinesiology field is really the path they want to pursue after high school. We are targeting students that are passionate about fitness, learning about their own health and wanting to change the lives of others.

Why is this program good for Halton students?

  • Students do not have to pay for the costly Can Fit Pro certification course
  • Students who wouldn’t have the time or money to try these course get to do it while earning high school credits
  • Students receive a hands-on approach to learning, as they continually apply the theory in the course to eating, training, teaching and motivating
  • It improves students’ self-esteem as they find something they are passionate and interested in- whilst gaining accredited certifications.
  • It improves students’ resumes for a variety of jobs

University Bound-Students can teach fitness classes at University for part-time employment or do personal training at schools in order to earn money to supplement their living expenses. Post- graduation this could help and enhance students resume if they go through for kinesiology, naturopathy or anything in the health science arena

College Bound- Same as above

Workplace- Students can find a venue in which they can be successful. Personal training and fitness instructing jobs are a great way to enter the fitness industry. Students with excellent now how and interpersonal skills will excel in this as a career.

* During these courses students learn about how to live a healthy life and have key knowledge on how to personal train their own bodies and eat healthy for optimal performance.
