Energy Program SHSM

About The Program

Energy generation, energy consumption, and energy conservation are issues that are becoming increasingly important in Ontario and around the world. The Specialist High Skills Major (SHSM) in Energy offers students the opportunity to explore the energy sector and to gain knowledge and skills that will allow them to participate in an economy in which energy is a significant factor.

Who would be interested in the program?

The Energy SHSM addresses the needs of students in all four pathways. It is designed for students interested in:

  • careers in engineering, skilled trades, or energy-related occupations.
  • the economic, environmental, and societal impacts of energy generation, energy consumption, and energy conservation.
  • alternative energies such as solar and wind, or renewable energies such as biofuels.
  • exploring opportunities in this ever-expanding sector of the world economy.

Students will:

  • Be exposed to skilled trades such as electrical, automotive, construction, manufacturing, and HVAC trades, as well as professional areas such as engineering, science, and architecture.
  • gain skills and knowledge associated with the energy sector, including energy generation, alternative energy, renewable energy, and energy conservation.
  • participate in experiential learning with community partners in the energy sector, such as engineering firms, contractors, and utilities, through co-op placements, field trips, and guest speakers.
  • work collaboratively as part of a team to solve real-world problems and design and build projects.
  • gain an appreciation for the environmental, economic, and societal impacts of energy generation, consumption, and conservation.
  • earn industry-recognized certifications such as safety and first aid, WHMIS, Young Worker Awareness, and CAD (computer assisted design) proficiencies.
