What is the SHSM Arts & Culture Program at Christ The King?

A Special High Skills Major (SHSM) is a senior program that begins in
Grade 11 and continues in Grade 12. A SHSM offers students the opportunity to explore a specific career interest in the Arts and
acquire the skills and experience that will assist them in determining
their post secondary pathway. All post secondary pathways are available with this program: Apprenticeship Training, College, University and the Work Place.

Learning About Arts…Through The Arts
Arts education helps our young people build their confidence, express their individuality, creativity and improve how well they learn other school subjects. Studies show that students, who participate in the Arts, develop math, literacy and writing skills with increased proficiency.
What can I do to prepare?
- Plan accordingly: take the Grade 9 and Grade 10 Arts courses that will lead into this SHSM and act as your prerequisite to senior Music and Drama and Dance courses.
- Attend a Parent/Student School to Career Information Evening. See your guidance department for dates.
- Visit your guidance counsellor at your home school for further information.
When can I get started?
- This is a limited enrollment program
- Apply in your Grade 10 year.
- To register, log onto www.onsorts.ca using your OEN number and birth date. OEN numbers can be found on report cards, student cards, credit counselling summaries. Interested students will receive an electronic message with an interview time. Complete the assignment package to the interview.

- Standard First Aid
- CPR
- WHMIS
- Three additional certifications based on program choice

- There is a fee of $150.00 for two years
